Example: a 2,500 sq ft two-story in a hot climate with a kitchen, five people, sunny exposure and average insulation. 2,500 × 20 = 50,000, times 1.10 for sun and 1.10 for the climate, is 60,500, plus 1,800 for the people and 4,000 for the kitchen, is 66,300 BTU/hr, about 5.5 tons. No single system does that, so it is two: a 1,400 sq ft main floor with the kitchen (33,900 + 1,800 + 4,000 = 39,700, a 3.5-ton system) and an 1,100 sq ft upstairs (26,600, a 2.5-ton system).
