A 450 square foot space is a 15 by 30 great room, a large living and dining area, a studio apartment with a kitchenette (450 is one of the most common studio sizes in US cities), or a small open-plan basement. The cooling load is 9,000 BTU/hr, and it sits between the 8,000 and 10,000 BTU classes, so a 10,000 BTU unit is the baseline buy.

The upgrade to 12,000 BTU comes fast. Poor insulation takes the room to 10,400, a 10 ft ceiling to 11,300, four people to 10,200, and sunny plus poor to 11,400. A kitchenette adds 4,000 flat and lands at 13,000, which means a 14,000 BTU unit. Only a shaded, well-insulated room (7,300) drops back to 8,000 BTU.

Shape matters as much as area at this size. A 15 by 30 room is long and narrow, and a window unit at one end will hold 72 degrees within ten feet of itself while the far end sits at 78. That is an airflow problem, not a BTU problem, and buying a bigger unit does not fix it. A ceiling fan pushing air down the room, or a mini-split with its wider throw and higher fan speed, does. The 12,000 BTU single-zone mini-split is where a lot of 450 sq ft rooms end up for exactly this reason.

Portables struggle here. Even a 14,000 BTU ASHRAE portable delivers around 9,500 BTU SACC, which barely clears the 9,000 load with nothing left for a sunny day. If a portable is the only option, a dual-hose model gets closer to its rating.

Example: a 15 by 30 studio with a kitchenette, one person, average sun and insulation, moderate climate. 450 × 20 = 9,000, plus 4,000 for the kitchen, is 13,000 BTU/hr, so a 14,000 BTU unit. Skip the kitchen box and the calculator says 10,000, one full class short of what the room needs at dinner time.
